Rusty Lake: Roots is the tenth title in the surreal Cube Escape series of room escape/point-and-click games. In Roots, you will solve puzzles by finding items and clues scattered around the manor of a family dating back to 1860, slowly revealing their history and secrets. Every level in Rusty Lake: Roots centers on one or more characters, such as James or Emma Vanderboom. At least one character will always be present in each stage and able to provide a general guide of what to do next.
Often your goal for a stage is to meet their request, like getting them a certain item. If you tap the character’s head, they’ll display a thought bubble of what they want, which is usually your current or overall goal. Your final goal for each stage is always to make the white square appear, which will allow you to exit: often completing a character’s request will make the square appear, but if not, that is your secondary goal. Turn up the volume. Rusty Lake features a beautiful soundtrack in and of itself, but turning up the sound and listening is beneficial to puzzles, as well.
Often when you successfully complete a task you’ll receive audible recognition, like a swelling of the music or a click of a lock opening. These cues are useful to know you’re on the right track and can move forward. In past games, sound has actually been needed to complete the game, so don’t underestimate its value.
Don’t forget to drag. Although recent Cube Escape entries have featured dragging as a viable move while solving puzzles, it’s become much more prevalent in Roots. If you tap an object and it seems pliable but does nothing, try dragging it. Some items may not seem draggable but are.
When in doubt, tap and drag. In this walkthrough “dragging” can mean two different things: dragging the screen to view another area of the level or dragging an item to move it, but it should be fairly clear which we’re referring to at the time. So, for instance, when the three children’s branches open up, we played Emma’s first (leftmost branch) and then played all of Emma’s levels that emerged from her initial stage. Tap on the box and drag the lock right to open it. Take SEED; exit the suitcase. Drag right; pick up CAN. Drag left; use CAN on well.
Use the handle of the well to get CAN WITH WATER. Exit close-up.
Tap on dog. Give BONE to dog. Dog will dig a hole in the dirt. Use SEED on the hole and CAN WITH WATER on seed twice.

Drag the stool over to James. Tap him to get him to stand on it.
Tap on the orange pots; pick up WORM off the ground. Tap the left pot to get DIAMOND (WHITE).
Exit close-up. Tap on tree; tap on left, grayish branch three times to get TWIG. Exit close-up. Tap on James to zoom in. Give him TWIG. Tap James so he stretches up.
Tap him again and he’ll reach higher. Tap him one more time to knock the bird’s nest down. Exit close-up.
Tap the bird’s nest to enter close-up; tap the egg four times to hatch a crow. Give WORM to crow. Tap the crow and it flies away; take the DIAMOND (GREEN). Exit close-up.
Drag screen right to view the house. Tap the window to enter close-up. Tap the diamond in the window; after three taps the glass cracks and a shadow appears. Keep tapping until the glass breaks; take DIAMOND (BROWN). Exit window; tap on door to enter close-up. Put the three diamonds in the indentations in the door.
Thanks for checking my guide, but first of all, let me tell you three things:. As far as i have tested, you CANNOT grab these gold emblems unitl you finish the main story line. I tried resetting and then doing it before i finished the main story and they just dont work. You're spoiling yourself by reading this guide! Every Gold emblem becomes way easy to get after you know exactly what you're going to do, so either keep trying or at least click on the name of the character you're stuck with on the sidebar, so you don't have to see the solution for the others while you scroll down. If you need help with the main story puzzles, you won't find it here. I suggest you either pressing ' Esc' key during the game and then pressing the ' Walkthrough' button, a browser will open and you'll be sent straight to the part of the video related to the room you were when you clicked the ' Walkthrough' button, so that's pretty easy to get a tip on what you're stuck with without spoiling the rest.Or you can also www.rustylake.com where you can choose the video you need.That being said, let's start with the solutions!When you finish the main story line, you'll get a congratulations screen with a button labeled as ' More roots'.
You either click there, or in case you missed it, just restart the game and when you're at the tree screen, click on the ' +' symbol on the top-left corner, you'll get this image:You can now only click the big portaits, the ones with family members names on it. And each one has a hidden gold emblem.
So let's start with James. Go straight to James' briefcase and even though it's already open, put the number ' 666' on it.If the screen flashes, then you've done it right. If it didn't, just try leaving the briefcase area then going back in and changing the numbers around to something like '665' or whatever and then put '666' back again, now it will flash.Then you'll see a small rip near the briefcase emblem, click on it until it reveals the gold emblem plus a lot of tarot cards that will help you on getting the other family emblems!That's all for James' gold emblem, but remember to screenshot that suitcase if you're going to attempt the other emblems without using this guide. Yes, let's go straight from James to Frank, skip everyone else, you'll understand why.The Hermit Tarot card (Related to Frank, of course) gives the tip on how to get his emblem. Just cick on the 'items code' wall that Frank used to get items from Rose and you can now CLICK on the letters to spell CROW.As far as i've tested it, you can use any ' O' from either ' FOOD' or ' WOODEN' and also any ' W' from either ' WATER' or ' WOODEN'.
The ones i've picked on the screen are just the ones i've choosen.Notice you'll also get THIS card near Frank's gold emblem, and this is the tip to get his grandma Mary's emblem. That's why i skipped her and everyone else.

The war hero of the family get his gold emblem by just placing the birds on the positions referenced by the Death Tarot card found on James' briefcase:The symbols under the directions are the references you need to know 'which pidgeon goes where'. Just look at their necks. ( The white one has no symbol because it has no symbol on his neck either )Just in case you wonder, this is how it looks like on the Pidgeon Map. White and Green to point A and Blue and Red to point DDon't forget of course to ring the bell and get the gold emblem from the ground like you had to do to get the bike parts. The last one, Rose!Her emblem was the hardest one for me to get, as simple as it sounds, i didn't quite figured it out what her hint meant and i have to thank kot bliny from the Rusty lake Roots steam forum for the tip they gave me so i could finally understand what it meant.
It works like this:First, when you get Albert's gold emblem, you also get the Empress Tarot card that gives you the last tip on Ida's emblem. BUT if you click the card, you can flip it backwards:Like i said, at first i was lost on this, but turns out it works like this:First is R1, right? Well, we need the 1st letter of the family member that starts with R on their name. Naturally, it's Rose, so the letter is 'R' itself.Second is S4. Samuel is the only one that start with S, so his 4th letter is U, then the second letter is U.Middle-way during the translation, you'll figure out easily what you need to type on Rose's ouija board:Yep, RUSTYLAKE, in case you can't see.If you've been following this guide from the beginning or either Rose was your last one left, congratulations! You got all the emblems and this achievement:Now it's over right?Or is it?
After you get all the gold emblems, you'll see that a new portait will appear under James' portait. That's right, it's William, James uncle. Also brother of Aldous, which IS Mr. Crow, in case you don't know.You'll only see Aldous there, not William, and he asks you to make an Elixir, and call you brother, so i believe you're PLAYING AS William.Click on the alchemy set + cupboard at the right of Aldous and let's get started:You can really go CRAZY on the alchemy here.
This puzzle works a lot as the popular game ' ', also on Steam. You can even go as far to make eletricity itself, lamp, dynamite, metal, etc.But all we need are two things: An Egg and a Glass Bottle. You get this reference by focusing on the FLAG at the left of Aldous.
But to get them, you'll need to make other things first.
